As part of a kitchen feature in the October edition of Bath Life magazine, our Bath design team, Charlotte Wright and Cassie Nelson-Hall, was asked to think of three key ingredients that make a kitchen special.

Their answers needed to consist of things which anybody could do or add to their existing kitchen without requiring significant structural changes to the space or property.

These are their top three ideas from a list that also included lighting, display furniture and instant boiling hot water taps.

  • Downdraft Extraction

  • Comfort

  • Decor

Downdraft Extraction

Improvements in downdraft extraction technology, particularly recirculating technology, have revolutionised the kitchen space. Due to their space-saving design and clean-air technology, downdraft cooktops make a number of lifestyle improvements possible:

  • Look at your guests while cooking by positioning the cooktop on an island without smoke and steam rising in front of your face.

  • Display decorative overhead lighting over the cooking area without fear of making it greasy or dirty.

  • Talk and listen to guests more easily due to the lower levels of noise.

  • You and your room no longer smell of the last meal you cooked as odours are removed downwards at the source, not pulled up into the air.

Comfort

If you want guests to enjoy time in a kitchen space, a casual seating arrangement within easy talking distance of the cook can improve their physical level of comfort.

Simple bar stools can make perfect, versatile seats to pull up and enjoy a coffee on, or have a child sit on while you help them with their homework as you prepare dinner.

The iconic CH56 stools by Carl Hansen & Son (pictured) are available in a number of beautiful finishes that would complement any home or décor.

DÉCOR

The outlook for kitchen design presents a vision of bolder colours, material combinations, nature (biophilic) well-being, and decorative patterns. These elements can be realized, in part, through the kitchen furniture and the selection of surface finishes, including natural materials, tactile shapes, and vibrant colours.

As seasons change, layering items such as houseplants, eye-catching artwork, illustrative wallpapers, artistic backsplashes, colourful cookbooks, and personal artefacts across the space enables the room to be refreshed at will. This allows the character and style of the household to be displayed for all to see, making the kitchen unique and the true "heart of your home."
