The Brief

Creating a kitchen that enhanced the ergonomic functionality, improved user access, increased storage capability and provided a higher quality finish were the key aspects of our client’s brief.

The Design

Due to the existing polished concrete floor and wet underfloor heating, our clients did not wish to move water and waste services. This meant the sink remained on the island and the working area reflected the original layout.

Usable, easy-to-reach, storage space was maximised throughout, with the use of drawers instead of cupboards along lower units. Slim, full-width handles allow drawers and doors to be gripped with more than just fingertips and ensure storage remains closed if accidentally nudged.

The position of the structural supports that intersected the original island was carefully considered. By shortening and widening the island, compared to the original, our clients gained valuable front-of-island storage and a clean edge to the Silestone worktop and bulthaup furniture.

The subtle tones of the kitchen, Platinum, Dark Grey Aluminium and Walnut, were chosen to complement the polished concrete floor.

The natural wood grain of the walnut breakfast bar and pocket door links the kitchen areas together, providing a contrasting organic pattern to the precise geometry of the cabinetry.

The kitchen features a suite of Miele cooking, cooling and cleaning appliances, offering our clients the latest technologies to make their everyday tasks even easier than before.

A separate bulthaup b3 mixer tap and a Quooker Pro 3 boiling water tap arrangement allow our clients to work together in the kitchen. For example, if one person is washing up the second can easily fill a pan with boiling water without impeding the first.

In addition, the position and movement of the Quooker tap means the pan can be placed on the worktop to be filled, taking the weight of the vessel.

The kitchen includes an area specifically designed for our client’s creative hobbies and the various equipment and supplies required.

Deep drawers were designed to provide storage space for heavy sewing machines, above which a drawer of threads and needles was positioned for easy access when working.

The Pocket door cabinet is home to our client’s collection of cookery books, cups, glassware and a stage for breakfast and coffee preparations. The internal mini-worktop area offers a place for small electrical appliances that often clutter valuable worktop prep space, hiding them away when not in use.
