The Brief
A new bulthaup kitchen and social dining space was a key element of our clients plan for their property extension. The family kitchen was required to be a space to entertain all year round, providing great cooking functionality, casual seating, and an area from which guests could replenish glasses during summer garden parties.
The Design
“By pairing a simple, Greige laminate with the character of real wood, the respective characteristics of each serve to contrast and highlight the other.”
The positioning of certain kitchen elements, the hidden pantry and the Pocket Door, were carefully considered, allowing users wishing to access of this area to do so without interrupting those preparing food.
Given that the social aspect of the kitchen was so important, an ‘L’ shaped bar seating area in natural walnut veneer was incorporated at the garden end of the island to a) maximise natural light and views of the garden and b) to be used as a staging area for the summer months when eating/socialising outside. The walnut bar both references the tall cabinet material, and provides a warm, tactile surface for sitting at as well as differentiating kitchen workspace with social space.
The plan
The entrance to the kitchen is down a half-flight of stairs, and the design of the kitchen is orientated such that the eye is drawn through the kitchen and out into the garden.
All tall cabinets are grouped at the darker end of the kitchen so as to not restrict views or cast unnecessary shadows over the working areas.
