Carl Hansen & Son

Every piece tells a story

Carl Hansen founded the company in 1908 on a strong belief: outstanding craftsmanship and rational serial production could go hand-in-hand to provide customers with high-quality furniture at a reasonable price.

The majority of the furniture produced today was designed by leading Danish architects back in the 1930s and up to the 1960s, but the design, the vision and the craftsmanship behind every piece of furniture is still as relevant today as it was then.

The company take great responsibility to ensure producing furniture with a long life is sustainable and made of wood harvested from sustainably managed forests and treated in a way that is as gentle as possible for the environment.

Carl Hansen & Son Design

Many of the company’s products have been in production for over 50 years with Hans Wegner’s chairs being sought after the world over. The Wishbone chair in particular is a piece that has stood the test of time with many new homes and buildings incorporating the it alongside contemporary furniture.

In the 1990’s, a surge of Danish Modern in auction houses around the world saw Carl Hansen and Son reintroduce a number of chairs that had been out of production for many years. Some of the designs including CH07, The Shell Chair, CH29 and The Sawbuck Chair, became instant successes and won international accolades.

Carl Hansen and Son are proud to be the largest producers of Wegner’s furniture however they understand that Danish Modern design never stands still. New furniture pieces from young designers, who have embraced the legacy of the designers before them, are included alongside established names.

Furniture Collection Highlights

CH24 Wishbone Chair – Perhaps Wegner’s most celebrated work. A light, attractive and comfortable dining chair with the characteristic Y-shaped back. It takes a skilled craftsman an hour to weave the seat with 120m of paper-cord.

CH20 Elbow Chair – The Elbow Chair is an attractive and simple stackable dining chair. The low back and horizontal seat also mean that it makes an excellent desk chair. The tapered legs and cross pieces are thickest where they need to support load-bearing joints and become more slender when the design allows.

CH56 Bar Stools – An upholstered bar stool that’s perfect for kitchens with open space.

CH07 Shell Chair – Originally designed in 1963 and reintroduced in 1998, the chair won several design awards as well as broad public appeal. Made from high quality hardwood laminates and the gently curved shells provide comfort and support.

CH165 Sofa – With visible structural elements the sofa is built from a solid Beech frame with upholstered cushions. This contrast of wood and textile or leather creates a pleasing visual aesthetic.
